I think this book, The Rice Mother by Rani Manicka has been lying around for too long. The mother lays eggs and new babies are born as the rice grows. For example, my host mother did not like rice and beans together in the same dish. I was born in Ceylon n 1916, at a time when spirits walked the earth just like people. Publishers recognised this unique insight and Manicka's The Rice Mother became one of the most fiercely-contended manuscripts. She lives in Florida and I have been a rolling stone wandering from coast to coast over the years. And some of the toxins, which are deadly, are just plain unavoidable. Because, unlike mercury, they're not in tuna and rice. I love to share my experiences in the kitchen and that's why I started. It chronicles the life of Lakshmi, who marries at 14 and raises her children and grandchildren during very hard times and some good ones.
